So, if I've done my math correctly (and you never know with me), I think it's safe to say that I have put in a little more than 40 hours at work in just about 4 days. I guess it's no wonder that on Wednesday I ACTUALLY FORGOT TO EAT DINNER.
Someone check and see if hell has frozen over. That must be what it's come to, if I actually didn't remember to feed myself. Sheesh.
I'm not complaining, though, I suppose I should clarify that. I'm actually pretty happy with the turnout of my week thus far. Productive is ALWAYS good. The first week of classes is always pure chaos, though. I guess I managed to avoid a mental breakdown because those 40+ hours were split (not so evenly, however) between two gigs. One is pretty mellow and quiet, and the other... is not.
My campus dining job is anything but calm and mellow. And there's never any shortage of shit to shovel (figuratively speaking, of course). But as much as it pains me to do so, I must admit that I missed the damn place. When I first clocked in after having the summer off, it felt a little odd, almost foreign. Yeah, well that changed after one hour, in no time at all it seemed as if I'd never gone anywhere. And everything usually moves so fast there, I guess it's no wonder I lost all sense of time. I went in on Monday, after 7 hours in the office, just to help out and ended up staying til closing, finally getting home at around 3am. Same kinda thing happened on Wednesday; I stopped in to see if they needed help and found myself still there 8 hours later (didn't stay til close though, I'm not that much of a sucker, I'm just a glutton for punishment).
Which is why I'm glad I have the office job in the morning. I'm not on my feet anywhere near as much, and the only ringing in my ears I experience is actually from a phone. A nice quiet office is always a nice change from an environment that at times can feel like I'm wrangling brain-dead howler monkeys.
I love my employees, there's no group quite like them (though, I could refer you to the movie Empire Records for a brief description of what our workplace is like), so it's actually the customers that I'm talking about here.
Exhibit A: Recent conversation with random customer.
Me: Uh, Kevin, would you like a half or a whole sub?
Kevin: What's the difference?
Me: (holding up a half a sub bun and a whole sub bun) Half. Whole.
Kevin: Can I get two halves?
Me: Let me see what I can do.
So much for OSU admissions getting more competitive lately.
