So, I realize that by posting this, I am obviously setting myself up to have to respond to someone else's bull shit... but I'm willing to accept that. For some reason, today I felt particularly fiesty, so when I had the chance to just slap my name on a generic letter to Congress concerning gay rights, I didn't take it. I wrote a version of my own, which I happen to be pretty proud of. Here it is:
Considering that the Constitution of the United States of America was drafted to represent the rights of the American citizen, I must speak out against these proposed amendments hindering the rights of homosexual Americans.
In no way do these amendments represent a United States that I want to be a part of. I am a natural born, heterosexual American citizen, yet I still feel sickened by the thought that my government, which I, myself have the duty of electing, is about to amend the Constitution to actually RESTRICT the rights of its gay citizens.
As much as I love this country, I continue to develope a deep sense of sadness over that fact that its thick blanket of democracy, which used to be so generously offered to anyone in need, is now being unrighteously denied to some of its citizens because of a mere differences in lifestyles.
I ask you, what are we telling the impressionable youth of our country? Which lesson would you like for them to learn in their American government class; that the United States of America stands for liberty and justice for ALL? Or that this liberty and justice business is only reserved for the elites that get to make up the rules?
Years from now, when the history books are rewritten, and our young citizens get to look back on our examples, are they going to see that we once taught our children that it was OKAY to mistreat someone because he was different from you? That intolerance for others beliefs and lifestyles was not only ignored but actually CONDONED by America's leaders?
Or will our future citizens be proud to see that their past generations upheld the idea that EVERY American has a right to their own pursuit of happiness?
I hope to God that time will prove the latter scenario true, and I ask you to consider it before you make any further decisions concerning the basic rights of our American citizens.
Oh yeah, you can create your own angry letter by clicking here.
